"And God spoke all these words, saying: 'I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me." (Exodus 20:1-3).

"If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods' - which you have not known - 'and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him.  But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken in order to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of bondage, to entice you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk.  So you shall put away the evil from your midst.  If your brother, the son of your mother, your son or your daughter, the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods,' which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers, of the gods of the people which are all around you, near to you or far off from you, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth, you shall not consent to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him; but you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people.  And you shall stone him with stones until he dies, because he sought to entice you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.  So all Israel shall hear and fear, and not again do such wickedness as this among you." (Deuteronomy 13:1-11).

"But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up." (Daniel 3:18).

"But you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God)..." (Exodus 34:13-14).

“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” (Matthew 4:10).

“And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, 'See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.'” (Revelation 19:10).

Thus far, the Jehovah's Witnesses are still with us; they agree that only One God should be worshipped -- if we can only push our way through the swarms of almost-gods and wanna-be gods with which they populate the sky to find Him! Worshipping one god while believing in many is a half-way house between polytheism and monotheism called 'henotheism': "Intermediate stage between polytheism and monotheism; worship of one god by an individual, clan, or nation to the exclusion of others; term applies when worshipper has achieved this measure of unity but is not sufficiently philosophically advanced to deny the existence of other gods..." (An Encyclopedia of Religion, Vergilius Ferm).  The Bible does not teach henotheism, but true monotheism: the existence of only One God.

A Jealous God

 A Jealous God

Only One Jehovah

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!" (Deuteronomy 6:4). The Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek is instructive: "Hear, O Israel, The Lord [κυριος ] our God is one Lord [κυριος ]." (Brenton Septuagint Deuteronomy 6:4). This is striking when you realize, in the Greek New Testament, the title 'Lord' [κυριος] most commonly is allotted to Jesus the Son: "But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord [But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord [κυριος] Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him." (1 Corinthians 8:6). 'Kyrios,' 'Lord,' is not a low or insignificant title, but the Greek rendition of God's great name 'Jehovah.'

  • You alone are the LORD; You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and everything on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.”
  • (Nehemiah 9:6).

Thus far, the Jehovah's Witnesses are still with us; from out of their crowded pantheon, they can pick out with no problem the only God named 'Jehovah'. It's just that they think there are lots and lots of gods...named other things!

Only One God

Here, we part company decisively from the Jehovah's Witnesses and Latter Day Saints, who openly confess that 'there are many gods'.  The Bible says, NOT:

Moses

"To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself is God; there is none other besides Him....Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other." (Deuteronomy 4:35-39).

"'Now see that I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver from My hand." (Deuteronomy 32:39).

Rahab

"And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath." (Joshua 2:11).

Joshua

"The Reubenites and the Gadites called the altar Witness; 'For,' said they, 'it is a witness between us that the LORD is God.'" (Joshua 22:34).

Joash

"But Joash said to all who were arrayed against him, 'Will you contend for Baal? Or will you defend his cause? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been pulled down." (Judges 6:31).

Hannah

"No one is holy like the LORD, for there is none besides You, nor is there any rock like our God." (1 Samuel 2:2).

David

"Therefore You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears." (2 Samuel 7:22).

"For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?" (2 Samuel 22:32).

"That all the people of the earth may know that the LORD is God, and that there is none else." (1 Kings 8:60).

"Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only." (2 Kings 19:19).

"O LORD, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears." (1 Chronicles 17:20).

"For who is God, except the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?" (Psalm 18:31).

"For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God." (Psalm 86:10).

Solomon

"And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the LORD, be near the LORD our God day and night, that He may maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day may require, that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no other." (1 Kings 8:59-60).

Elijah

"Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, 'The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!'" (1 Kings 18:39).

Elisha

"And he returned to the man of God, he and all his aides, and came and stood before him; and he said, 'Indeed, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel; now therefore, please take a gift from your servant.'" (2 Kings 5:15).

Hezekiah

"Then Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said: 'O LORD God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God. Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands - wood and stone.  Therefore they destroyed them. Now therefore, O LORD our God, I pray, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD God, You alone.'" (2 Kings 19:15-19).

"O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth." (Isaiah 37:16).

Hosea

"Yet I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt, and you shall know no God but Me; for there is no savior besides Me." (Hosea 13:4).

Jeremiah

"Inasmuch as there is none like You, O LORD (You are great, and Your name is great in might), who would not fear You, O King of the nations?...But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, and the nations will not be able to endure His indignation. Thus you shall say to them: 'The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.'...Every metalsmith is put to shame by an image; for his molded image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. They are futile, a work of errors; in the time of their punishment they shall perish. The Portion of Jacob is not like them, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; the LORD of hosts is His name." (Jeremiah 10:6-16).

Isaiah

"'You are My witnesses,' says the LORD, 'And My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the LORD, and besides Me there is no savior." (Isaiah 43:10-11).

"Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: 'I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God. And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me, since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that are coming and shall come, let them show these to them. Do not fear, nor be afraid; have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.'" (Isaiah 44:6-8).

"I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God besides Me. I will gird you, though you have not known Me, that they may know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there is none besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other; I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the LORD, do all these things.'" (Isaiah 45:5-7).

"Thus says the LORD: 'The labor of Egypt and merchandise of Cush and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over to you, and they shall be yours; they shall walk behind you, they shall come over in chains; and they shall bow down to you. They will make supplication to you, saying, "Surely God is in you, and there is no other; there is no other God."'" (Isaiah 45:14).

"For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else." (Isaiah 45:18).

"'Tell and bring forth your case; Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has declared this from ancient time? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, a just God and a Savior; there is none besides Me. Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth!  For I am God, and there is no other.'" (Isaiah 45:21-22).

"Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me...'" (Isaiah 46:9).

Joel

"Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the LORD your God and there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame." (Joel 2:27).

Jesus

"Jesus answered him, 'The first of all the commandments is: "Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." This is the first commandment.  And the second, like it, is this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." There is no other commandment greater than these.' So the scribe said to Him, 'Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.  And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.'" (Mark 12:29-33).

"So Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God." (Mark 10:18; Matthew 19:17).

"How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God?" (John 5:44).

James

"You believe that there is one God.  You do well.  Even the demons believe -- and tremble!" (James 2:19).

Paul

"Or is He the God of the Jews only?  Is He not also the God of the Gentiles?  Yes, of the Gentiles also, since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith." (Romans 3:29-30).

"Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one." (1 Corinthians 8:4).

"Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one." (Galatians 3:20).

"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. . ." (1 Timothy 2:5).

Jude

"Now to him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand without blemish in the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen." (Jude 1:24, NRSV). I include this textual variant for the benefit of those who prefer modern translations.

None Like Thee

How many entities find themselves in the same class with the living God? None:

"And he said, To morrow. And he said, Be it according to thy word: that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God." (Exodus 8:10).

"There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky." (Deuteronomy 33:26).

"Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works." (Psalm 86:8).
